A revolutionary new two-stroke platform could be on its way, with KTM teasing a big announcement on May 10 when it reveals its 2023 SX motocross range.
While KTM Australia is tight-lipped about the “special” news, internet rumours suggest it could be the introduction of a throttle body electronic fuel injection (TBI) system.
Online teasers from KTM have hinted at some big changes for the 2023 SX models, with a particular focus on the two-stroke range, but eagle-eye punters have also spotted major changes to the EFI system on factory KTM and Husqvarna race bikes.

The Austrian firm made headlines in 2017 when it introduced its revolutionary transfer port injection (TPI) to its 2-stroke enduro range. The electronic fuel injection system was the first of its kind, and was designed with the aim of improving performance and removing the need for premixing fuel.
KTM said at the time that TPI “makes the engine much smoother to ride, with a drastic reduction in fuel consumption and thus removing the need to premix fuel, or change the jetting settings for different environments”.
Throttle body injection differs from transfer port injection by placing injectors in the throttle body rather than the transfer port of the cylinder. The theory is that TPI is better for fuel economy and emissions, but that TBI results in better performance.
There are also suggestions that a new KTM TBI system would remove the oil pump, giving riders the opportunity to premix their own fuel once again.
Some TPI customers have been experimenting with aftermarket TBI kits for a couple of years, but it looks as though KTM has now developed its own system. What the benefits are remain to be seen, but all will be revealed on May 10.
