KTM has revealed its new automated transmission, which is set to be available soon on select upcoming models.
Dubbed AMT, the new system does away with the clutch lever, with the aim of making starting, stopping, and slow-speed manoeuvring much easier.
There are two modes available – “fully automatic” and “manual”. Automatic mode uses the bike’s electronics to control the gearbox, while manual mode allows riders to shift gears at their own leisure, albeit without a clutch lever.
But, while other automatic transmission systems rely solely on buttons or paddles for manual shifting, the KTM AMT system retains a traditional foot-operated gear lever. This allows riders to choose between shifting with their left foot or using the paddle shift on the left switch block, depending on their personal preferences.
The AMT gearbox also adds a “Park” gear to prevent unwanted rolling. This is achieved by a locking pawl within the gearbox.
Each mode can be customised with a wide range of configurations, while the modes also work in unison with the bike’s ride modes.
The AMT system is the first big reveal from KTM in the lead-up to EICMA in November. The Austrian firm is tight-lipped on which models exactly will debut the new tech, but it is expected the upcoming reveals will shed more light.
