According to a leaked KTM dossier, the future is orange. Very orange, it would seem.
The Austrian motorcycle maker's plans for the next three years have been revealed after a US-based dealer allegedly took this photo of its product plan and posted it on an American motorcycle enthusiast forum.
Not only does the public now have a detailed understanding of what KTM is planning up until 2014, but its rivals now have a leg up too.
Imagine all the world's major motorcycle manufacturers were playing a game of high stakes poker. No one knows what BMW's cards are, Honda always keeps it's cards close its chest and Yamaha is super careful not to show its hand. But now everyone has seen KTM's cards...
It would be an understatement to say the company is none too happy.
What of the leak? It applies to the North American market so there will be differences for European, Asian and Australian markets, but it does provide a good overview of what to expect from the black/orange brand.
From what we can glean from the camera phone photo, several face lifts and technical upgrades are on the way for its bread and butter models, and KTM appears to planning an assault on the small capacity road bike market with a 350cc Moto3 fully faired sports bike and the Duke 350 naked bike both confirmed for the USA.
The KTM Freeride electric dirt bike will be heading to the United States a year after it launches in Europe in 2012, available in SX and EXC guises. However the Freeride 350 is a bit puzzling. A hybrid version of the bike with both electric and petrol motors?
As mentioned, an interesting addition to the range is KTM Moto3 350, due in 2014. Will this be a road-legal version of its Moto3 road racing bike? Yes, it probably will, and yes, it could be a lot of fun.
There's also a couple of models with the '1290' tacked on, the first bike being 2013 Super Duke R 1290. Can you say hooligan bike? This new engine is likely to be the flagship powerplant for the company and will certainly give it a leg up against its Italian, German and Japanese rivals.
This new 1290cc engine is also listed for use in 2014 Adventure 1290 motorcycle, which will give BMW's big bore adventure bikes and Triumph's rumoured 1200cc Tiger some healthy competition. The list below is lifted from the leaked product plan photo:
