New Zealand workshop transforms Royal Enfield into custom sportsbike

The second edition of the Royal Enfield Busted Knuckles Build Off produced some impressive custom motorcycles

A retro-flavoured sports bike from New Zealand has won the second edition of Royal Enfield Australia’s custom bike build competition.

The 2022 Royal Enfield Busted Knuckles Build Off saw five dealerships across Australia and New Zealand transform current production Enfield models into mouth-watering custom machines.

Royale Motorcycles in Hamilton, New Zealand, was awarded the Expert’s Choice award for its No.55 GT Production Café Racer. The award was voted for by panel of custom bike and café racer publications, as well as Enfield aficionados and Royal Enfield UK’s Industrial Design Group Manager, Adrian Sellers.

The No.55 GT Production Café Racer was inspired by India’s domestic Royal Enfield GT Cup Production Racing series, which utilises the popular Continental GT 650 platform.

For Royal Motorcycles, the aim was to take the GT Cup platform and make it more of a modern sportsbike. The 17-inch wheels were fitted with Pirelli Diablo tires, while the bike also gained a bespoke exhaust system, including a hydroformed HP Corse end-can, and a steel chassis as opposed to an aluminium frame.

Other entries into the Busted Knuckles competition included the Regency Interceptor 650 Twin Scrambler (MotoMax Perth), a RevElation 650 Twin Salt Racer (Revelry Cycles Sydney), the Dr. No GT 650 Twin Café Racer (Fast Fuel Albury), and the No.40 Himalyana 650 Twin (SurfSide Motorcycle Garage Sydney).

Royal Enfield’s Head of International Business (APAC), Anuj Dua, said that the Busted Knuckles competition showed not only the customisation potential of the brand, but also the talent on offer in Australia and New Zealand.

“The custom builds reinforce that Royal Enfield motorcycles are the perfect canvas for customisation,” said Dua. “And Australia and New Zealand have some of the best custom building talent that we have seen anywhere in the world.”
