Well, sort of.
During the San Carlo Honda Gresini team's MotoGP launch at Monza in Italy, news emerged that the team will be factory backed by Honda. To put it simply, the Honda Gresini team will be sharing space, engineering and technical staff, plus information and possibly even hardware with the Respol Honda factory team.
Marco Simoncelli and Hiroshi Aoyama are the two riders of the San Carlo Honda Gresini team, and will benefit greatly from this move. It was widely expected that Simoncelli would get factory support, and this was bolstered by impressive times during 2011 testing at Sepang, but now Aoyama is going to get the good stuff too, meaning there will be five very competitive Honda's vying for supremacy at every race meet.
The boss of San Carlo Honda Gresini, Fausto Gresini, explained that the announcement of factory backing will be of great assistance to the team (translated from Italian): "We now have access to all data and Honda staff.”
As anticipation builds ahead of the 2011 MotoGP season, expect the bookies to be firming up Hondas odds of taking home the silverware...
