Honda has beaten BMW to the punch by releasing Australia's first high-tech maxi scooter, in the form of the Honda Integra.
Priced at $10,990 the new Honda maxi is powered by a 670cc parallel twin-cylinder engine pumping out 51hp and 60Nm -- enough shunt to propel it to well beyond 130km/h.
Perhaps the most technologically advanced aspect of the new maxi scooter is its dual clutch transmission: Instead of a regular and monotonous CVT, the dual clutch system winds through gears like a manual system and can do so automatically or manually.
According to the big 'H', the dual clutch transmission "offers the convenience and ease of use of an automatic transmission with the optional control of a manual mode should the rider choose it."
The dual clutch gearbox was first seen on the Honda VFR1200F and features three modes to suit different riding styles and situations.
The front forks measure 41mm, and 17-inch wheels combine with a diamond steel pipe frame and linked ABS to round out the chassis. The seat height is 790mm and the scooter's overall weight is 238kg.
Honda claims the Integra uses about 4lt/100km, which is a good figure for a vehicle of this size and weight.
Convenience features include storage cubbies in the main fairing for mobile phones, wallets and that sort of thing, while there's 15-litres of under seat storage space, "enough to hold a helmet or waterproof cover" says Honda.
Wind protection is taken care of via a large front screen and Honda says the riding position is "relaxed" and "comfortable".
Design wise, the Integra takes a few cues from the latest line of premium motorcycle in the Honda garage, such as the Crossrunner, Crosstourer and VFR1200F, making use large, smooth fairing panels and a modern design touches such as the cog-like engine cover.
Available in just one colour, Ion Blue Metallic, the Honda Integra is available now in Australia priced at $10,990.
