Suzuki reveals overhauled GSX-R1000R for 2026

Suzuki's flagship litre-class sportsbike has been given its first major update in nearly a decade

Suzuki has revealed a new GSX-R1000R for 2026, complete with significant updates that will see the popular model return to global markets.

It coincides with the 40th anniversary of the iconic GSX-R750’s debut in 1985, and that means special edition graphics and badges to mark the occasion.

The GSX-R1000R was discontinued in Europe three years ago due to tightening emissions regulations, but it remained on sale in Australia. A detuned version was also available for the American market.

But the 2026 version marks the first overhaul since 2017 and will allow Suzuki to sell the model in Europe and other markets once again.

The list of changes includes revised engine internals, new electronics, and optional winglets on the front cowling. Interestingly, the updates result in a horsepower reduction (192hp down from 199hp), but that allows Suzuki to meet Euro5+ emissions laws and sell the bike in Europe.

The engine and chassis are based on the same design that has been in place since 2017, but the changes are extensive.

Internally, the 999.8cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four-cylinder powerplant still features the SR-VVT (Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing) system, but many of the other components have been redesigned or replaced.

Suzuki Australia didn’t say in its press release what the power figures are, but international media outlets claim 192hp at 13,200rpm and 110Nm at 11,000rpm. Compression ratio has also increased to 13.8:1.

The electronics have mostly carried over although there is a new Smart TLR Control system that integrates traction control, and also adds Lift Limiter and Roll Torque Control for extra safety and precision. Launch control has also been updated and a new lithium ion battery helps reduce weight.

Suzuki says the bike will launch in Australia in the second half of 2026, meaning a long wait for would-be customers. Pricing is yet to be announced.

There is also a lower-spec GSX-R1000 (minus the second R), however it is unclear if that will be made available in Australia.
