Honda has reported a growing global interest in its electric motorcycle offerings, and intends to develop a modular electric motorcycle platform alongside fuel efficiency improvements and flex-fuel offerings to its outgoing combustion models.
Plans to develop the modular platform coincide with the finalisation of a new motorcycle plant, which Honda claims will be fully operational by 2028. The Indian-based manufacturing plant is expected to boost industry-wide Honda sales in the Global South to a target of 60 million units by 2030.
Honda has equally large targets for the global motorcycle market. For fiscal year 2024, Honda claimed approximately 40 per cent of global motorcycle sales, with a record breaking sales figure of 20.57 million units. Honda says it hopes to achieve a global market share of 50 per cent for FY2031.
Very little detail has been provided for future motorcycle products. One contender for the Australian market is the Honda CUV e – a dedicated electric scooter with a focus on dense city commuting.
The CUV e has expanded from an initial launch in Indonesia to Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines, and will further expand to Europe and Japan this year. Currently, Honda Australia has not specified if the CUV e will be marketed locally.
