2-trac too hard?

Reports from Europe say that Yamaha is somewhat reluctantly putting its 2-trac two-wheel-drive system on the backburner until another manufacturer shows an interest.

The system has gained a lot of positive reviews over time, though in production form on a WR450 turned out to be quite expensive and may not have met with the market enthusiasm the company hoped for.

It has also been trialled on Yamaha road bike prototypes and is said to be worth a few seconds a lap – though whether it would be accepted for race homologation is entirely another matter.

The system, which delivers power to the front wheel via hydraulics, is actually owned by suspension company Ohlins, which in turn is 75% owned by Yamaha.

We hear that Yamaha would like to see another manufacturer show an interest and perhaps then, with a couple of brands behind it, the system might take off.

In the meantime, Ohlins offers the system as a stand-alone kit which it says can be adapted to most motorcycles.
