The Yamaha Fazer 250 isn't quite as faithful to the original blueprint as the Tenere XTZ250, which is built at the same plant, but it does represent an interesting quandary for Yamaha.
With a bike like the Fazer 250, powered by a half-decent air-cooled four-stroke 250cc single-cylinder engine that cranks out 21hp (15kW), can Yamaha export it around the world and make money?
It probably could, but with global motorcycle markets still in the doldrums the timing isn't right. But in the future when the market volatility has faded, things could certainly change.
Bearing a passing resemblance to the 800cc Fazer, or FZ8 as it's known, the learner-friendly 250cc Fazer would compete against bikes such as the Honda VT250 and Hyosung GT250, the latter of which retails for under $6000.
Will we see price-wars in the future between Japanese-badged budget bikes from Brazil and India, hoping to stem the tide of improving Korean and Chinese product, all vying for the lucrative LAMS dollar? The signs are looking more and more likely...
