The original and the best? Vespa has (re)launched its iconic PX150 scooter, bringing back the classic Vespa shape and styling but packaged with modern-day technology.
Priced at $5990 plus on road costs, the new Vespa PX150 retains much of the charm of the original, including a two-stroke engine, four-speed gearbox and the robust steel body.
PS Importers, the company that brings Vespa scooters into Australia, is expected to have the new model on sale by July 2011.
The styling and design of the new model are faithful to the original, but Vespa has made an effort to ensure the character of the scooter remains true, retaining a two-stroke engine 150cc engine, albeit in much cleaner form than the engines used more than 30 years ago when the PX was first unleashed.
"The Vespa has been an integral part of our history and a unique phenomenon in the history of popular culture," says Vespa. "It was the vehicle that brought personal mobility to Europe in the post-war Europe and saw younger generations take different sides with their Vespas and Lambrettas, or as Mods and Rockers."
Vespa's modern day two-smoker is Euro 3 compliant and features forced air cooling, electronic ignition and, though it has an electric starter, the kick starter has been retained for both aesthetics and practicality.
Another feature that remains true to the original Vespa PX scooter is the four-speed manual gearbox, which is operated via a toggle on the handlebar.
The chassis consists of link arm front suspension with coil spring and dual action hydraulic shocker, while the engine takes up the role of the swingarm with a dual action shock. Brakes comprise a 200mm front disc brake and a 150mm rear drum brake affixed to 10-inch wheels.
The Vespa PX weighs 97kg and has an 810mm seat height, and perhaps the only clue that this is a modern-day vehicle is the contemporary instrument panel.
Some of the other smaller details that will please fans include the black rubber hand grips complete with tiny Vespa logos, the tiny front mount glovebox and the classic chrome headlight.
Vespa has sold more than three million PX models over the past three decades, and the new model is shaping up to deliver simple transport in a retro package.
Arriving in Australia from July 2011, the Vespa PX 150 will be priced from $5990 plus on road costs, and can be ordered in Monte Bianco (white), Nero Lucido (Black), Rosso Dragon (red) and Azzuro Mediterraneo (Blue).
