After another crash at Brno last weekend at the World Superbike Championship, Australian rider Chris Vermeulen has decided to sit out the rest of the 2010 season.
An official statement was released late last night: "Chris will be suspending his race and test activities from the Hannspree World Superbike Championship so that immediate corrective medical treatment can be sought without delay and to help ensure that Chris can return to full fitness in preparation for the 2011 Kawasaki Racing Team programme."
Vermeulen's fall at Brno caused further damage to his already injured right knee (from an incident at Phillip Island during round one), and the Kawasaki Racing Team rider's recovery has been protracted ever since.
The ligament damage to his knee is considered severe enough that he may undergo reconstructive surgery "to regain full use and control of the knee".
While 2010 has not been a good year for Vermeulen, he is expected to return to WSBK racing in 2011 fully fit and recovered from his knee injuries.
He will also be riding the brand-new Kawasaki ZX-10R race bike which has the potential to put him back at the pointy end of the field.
