BMW Motorrad achieved a record year in 2021, with a 14.8 per cent increase in sales. It is the best year of sales in the history of the Munich firm.
The company delivered 194,261 units globally in 2021, compared to 169,272 in 2020. The increase in sales came despite the challenges faced by all brands as a result of the pandemic.
"The fact that we still managed to finish 2021 with this fantastic result for BMW Motorrad not only makes me happy, but also incredibly proud,” said BMW Motorrad boss, Markus Schramm. “It’s precisely in times of crisis where you can see how well a team sticks together.”

Europe continued to be the strongest market for BMW Motorrad, with Italy (16,034 units and a 15.2 per cent increase), Spain (12,616/14.4 per cent increase), and France (19,887/13.4 per cent increase) posting notable results.
China also showed considerable growth with 14,309 units sold for a 21.4 per cent increase. India grew by 102.5 per cent with 5191 units sold.
Other strong markets include the USA (16,030 units/32.1 per cent increase), Brazil (11,150 units/4.2 per cent increase), and Great Britain and Ireland (9263 units/26.6 per cent increase).
The brand’s homeland remains the largest market with 25,972 units sold in Germany in 2021.
Boxer-powered models are still the key driving force for BMW’s sales. The R 1250 GS and GS Adventure were the most popular bikes, with a total of 60,000 units delivered in 2021. Strong sales for the new R 1250 RT and the four-bike R 18 line-up helped the boxer models account for roughly half of the total BMW Motorrad sales.
Also of note in 2021 was the introduction of BMW’s first dedicated M motorcycle. The high-performance M 1000 R sold a respectable 1070 units, while the S 1000 RR, S 1000 XR, and S 1000 R also sold well.
It set to be another big year for the brand in 2022, with the launch of the electric CE 04 and the updated K 1600 range. The company is also promising plenty of surprises for BMW fans.
