Yamaha has launched a new-generation R1 at an international dealer conference in Las Vegas, USA.
The company claims the machine is the closest ever to the M1 MotoGP race bike, featuring a new engine and frame.
Perhaps the most curious feature is what's called the crossplane crankshaft for the 998cc engine, with a firing order of 270 degrees, 180, 90, 180.
Yamaha says the design provides a much more direct feel between rider and throttle, while the engine feels and sounds smoother.
It claims 184.5hp at 12,500rpm and 11.8kg-m of torque at 10,000rpm.
The machine also runs a new version of the deltabox frame with the package claiming a wet weight of 206 kilos.
Fiat Yamaha Team riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, plus Tech 3 Yamaha team-mates Colin Edwards and James Toseland were on hand for the unveiling.
"This is a great bike, it's very like my M1 and it's exciting to see so many MotoGP qualities now appearing on a bike for the road. I think everyone who loves the R1 and Yamaha will be very excited about this new version, it's fantastic!" said Rossi.
The company also unveiled a new litre-class cruiser, the V-twin XVS950, plus a middle weight, the four-cylinder XJ600 Diversion.
