KTM 450 SMR returns for 2021, but not to Australia

After a seven-year absence, KTM has resurrected the 450 SMR supermoto machine, but it's not coming to Australia

The KTM 450 SMR is returning to the Austrian marque’s line-up, seven years after its last appearance. The lightweight supermoto machine is directly derived from the championship-winning KTM 450 SX-F motocross machine.

But for Australian punters hoping to place an order, the model is unfortunately not coming to our shores for 2021. The previous version was imported to Australia in limited numbers, but KTM Australia could not justify bringing in the new model, given the small size of the local supermoto scene.

KTM Australia does offer the KTM 690 SMC R (priced at $16,895), while sister brand Husqvarna offers a 701 Supermoto (priced at $15,995) – so not all is lost for Aussie supermoto fans. KTM are also developing a new 750 Supermoto T with CFMoto.

The 2021 KTM 450 SMR is powered by the decorated 450cc engine that has dominated international motocross and supercross. The single-cylinder 4-stroke engine produces a claimed 63hp and weighs just 27kg, contributing to the overall low weight of the bike.

Additionally, the engine is complimented by a Pankl Racing Systems 5-speed gearbox with an advanced sensor permitting specific engine maps for each gear. A Suter slipper clutch further enhances the bikes performance.

A special chromium molybdenum steel frame is tuned specifically for the 450 SMR, while the WP XACT fork and rear shock offer premium suspension performance. The bike also features premium Brembo braking components.

In the rubber department, the KTM 450 SMR features slick Bridgestone tyres that are mounted on supermoto specific Alpina spoked tubeless wheels. Completing the supermoto look are race-friendly plastics and a striking colour scheme.
