Harley-Davidson XR750TT racer

This race-winning sports bike was built by Harley-Davidson in the early 1970s, and continues its winning form today

This is the 'other' side of Harley-Davidson history that rarely gets the attention of the classic chopper, the 1972 XR750TT race bike.

Restored by John Warr, owner of Warr's Harley-Davidson dealership (one of the oldest in London) the 1972 HD racer is one of 10 bikes built back in the early '70s and is famous for its providing Harley-Davidson with several unexpected victories at the hands of HD factory rider Cal Rayborn.

The bike recently made news after it took out top honours in its class at the exclusive Salon Privé, one of a handful of European concours d’elégance shows that celebrate classic vehicles.

Previously the Salon Privé has only been open to four-wheeled vehicles, but in 2012 motorcycles were invited to exhibit, and the Harley-Davidson XR750TT took out the 'Important Competition Machines’ class.

"As you would expect the level of scrutiny from the Salon judges was severe but the quality of our work and attention to detail shone through and enabled us to win the UK's ultimate Concours," said John Warr.

The bike is in immaculate condition and is as per the original bike features Ceriani front forks, double-sided 4LS front brakes, twin carburettors and a four-speed gearbox.

When most people think of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, they see choppers, cruisers and bobbers in their mind's eyes', but imagine if Harley returned to road racing one day, with a modern day version of this stunning classic?

With Buell no longer a part of the company, would you support a Harley-Davidson return to the fully-faired sports bike segment? Have your say in the comments below.
