Ducati SuperSport imminent?

Industry rumours at the recent World Ducati Week indicate the Italian manufacturer is on the verge of reviving one of its iconic model names…
Ducati is rumoured to be resurrecting its hallowed SuperSport name, with automotive media website autoevolution reporting the news surfaced – unofficially, at least – at the recent World Ducati Week festival at Misano, San Marino.
The site reports that while there's not yet any photo of the new machine, it is thought to be a mixture of the marque's Monster 1200 naked bike and 959 Panigale, and is to be powered by the Hypermotard 939's liquid-cooled Testastretta 11º V-twin. That would place a handy 113hp (83.1kW) and 97.9Nm at its disposal, should the engine be left as is in its current guise.
The new SuperSport is said to have clip-on handlebars, a slipper clutch and a two-into-two exhaust, along with a one-piece seat and a Panigale-inspired front-end with adjustable windscreen.
The frame is believed to be a tubular trellis, like SuperSport models of old, while pricing is believed to be in the vicinity of Euro 14,000 to 15,000 ($A20,460 $A21,920).

The name can trace its way back to the round case 750 Super Sport of 1973, a model then backed up by the square case 750 Super Sport and 900 Super Sport of 1975. The 1977 model pictured is the rare Imola version, built to celebrate Ducati's historic 1-2 win at the Italian circuit in 1972 with Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari.  While this first generation of machines were produced from 1972 to 1981, a second family of SuperSport model arrived in 1988, and remained in production until 2007.

World Ducati Week also saw the unveiling of the new and ultra-exotic 1299 Panigale S Anniversario, of which just 500 will be produced.
