Ducati Diavel recall

The Italian power cruiser, and the Multistrada, have been recalled due to a software glitch than can cause the handlebars to stay locked

Ducati has issued a recall notice for the 2011 Diavel power cruiser and 2010 and 2011 model year Multistrada 1200 motorcycles. The recall is said to affect around 369 motorcycles in Australia and the faulty aspect is a software issue, part of the ECU or engine control unit.

The recall notice affects vehicles in Europe as well, and the official line is that "There is a chance the engine can be started while the electronic steering lock is still activated."

If this occurred, the motorcycle could potentially careen off the road at the first corner it approaches with the electronic steering lock still engaged, meaning the bars cannot be moved to steer the bike.

"Under some special conditions of use, upon instrument panel switch-on, the hands free control unit could cause the failed disengagement of the electronic steering lock," says the 'defect' part of the recall notice.

Ducati is obliged to write Ducati to all owners nationally and inform them of the fault, after which they can take their Ducati Diavel or Multistrada to an authorised dealer to update the ECU software, a service which is free of charge.
