MV Agusta has suspended production in line with new government restrictions aimed at reining in the spread of COVID-19.
The historic motorcycle manufacturer is based in Schiranna on the shores of Lake Varese in northern Italy. It lies roughly 100km west of the city of Bergamo, which is widely recognised as the current epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in what is now the worst-affected nation on the planet in terms of fatalities.
The virus has claimed the lives of nearly 7000 Italians, as of Wednesday morning (March 25).
The impending closure comes just days after MV Agusta announced it would continue production with a limited number of staff, reflecting and the rapidly escalating nature of the COVID-19 threat.
"MV Agusta announces that, starting Thursday, March 26, and until the production ban is lifted, all activities at its Schiranna plant will be suspended, in compliance with the new, more restrictive measures for the prevention and the containment of the COVID-19 epidemic, announced last Sunday by Italy's Prime Minister," states an MV Agusta press release.
"The Schiranna facility will therefore be completely vacated by staff. Administrative and other non-shopfloor activities will be carried out from home, as far as possible, by those employees who can operate in a smart working mode. The remaining personnel will benefit from 'Cassa Integrazione Guadagni' [government-guaranteed unemployment benefits] or unused holiday allowances."
Timur Sardarov, CEO of MV Agusta, said the company was fully committed to adhering to the new framework for the good of its workers and the wider community.
"The safety of our employees and the compliance with all Government provisions are our number one priority," he said.
"We will do our part and fully collaborate with those who are presently working hard for the common good, scrupulously following their directions. We look to the future with confidence, ready for a new start once the emergency is over."
