Harley-Davidson has revealed a new single-cylinder X440 model in India, but it is not scheduled to make its way to Australia just yet.
The brand's local arm confirmed that it doesn't believe the X440 will be available Down Under, but didn't rule out the possibility of that changing in the future.
Built in collaboration with Indian giant, Hero MotorCorp, the new X440 is powered by a 440cc single-cylinder oil-cooled engine that puts 38Nm and 27hp.
The bike will also feature a KYB fork and adjustable twin rear shocks, as well as LED lighting, a 3.5-inch TFT display, a USB charger, and smartphone connectivity.
While the X440 has only been confirmed for India, it could conceivably come to Australia as a LAMS-approved entry point into the Harley-Davidson range. It would provide the Motor Company with a legitimate rival to the likes of learner-friendly brands like Royal Enfield, Benelli, and CFMOTO, as well as Triumph's new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X.
Harley previously had the popular Street 500 as a learner-friendly option, however that was discontinued in 2021.
Pricing in India for the X440 starts at INR 229,000, which roughly converts to $4172 AUD. The bike comes in four colour schemes – Denim Mustard as standard, and Vivid Dark Silver, Vivid Thick Red, and Matte Black as premium options.
As well as its relationship with Hero MotorCorp, Harley-Davidson has also established ties with China’s Qianjiang, which is the parent company of Benelli. That partnership has produced the parallel-twin Harley-Davidson X350 and X500, however both are currently only available in China.
Harley-Davidson is the latest company to look to India and China for joint ventures, with Triumph recently unveiling the Bajaj Auto-built Street 400 and Scrambler 400 X models, and KTM working closely with CFMOTO on a number of projects.
Born in Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson is one of the world's biggest motorcycle manufacturers and is famous for its USA-built V-twin cruisers. The company is celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2023.
