In the post-GFC economic landscape, riders have become accustomed to being bombarded by value-added motorcycle distributor/dealer promotions, but while many of these ploys barely raise an eyebrow, American ebike manufacturer Zero Motorcycles has come up with a deal that certainly stands out. For any new 2012 Zero model purchased in the second half of May, and Zero Motorcycles is covering the electricity required to charge the bike for its first 25,000 miles (or 40,000km).
Read the fine print and you'll soon discover that the electricity involved amounts to a total of just US$200 -- that's what Zero Motorcycles will send the relevant buyers in the form of a Visa gift card -- but more importantly it's a very clever way of highlighting the ultra-low running costs of an electric bike, especially in comparison to standard gas-guzzling fare.
Zero says that figure is based on 25,000 miles on a Zero S at 10 cents per kWh for a 90 cent complete charge cycle, and 222 charges required given its 114-mile range.
Zero Motorcycles offers a five-strong ebike line-up these days: the Zero S and Zero XU road models, the Zero X and Zero MX off-road models, and the Zero DS dual-sport.
Established in Santa Cruz, California in 2006, Zero Motorcycles is one of the heavyweights of the emerging ebike scene, but demand for the innovative machines has been soft Downunder -- Zero Motorcycles Australia in fact withdrew its products from the market and suspended operations in early May, 2012.
