Electric motorcycle brand Zero has been given a lifeline in Australia with a new distributor taking over from Peter Stevens immediately.
Australian Electric Motor Co has formed a “strategic alliance” with California’s Zero to take on distribution and retail operations locally.
It comes after previous distributor Peter Stevens gave up the rights following its financial turmoil and subsequent acquisition by Motorcycle Holdings and Joe Rascal Group.
“With our chapter alongside Peter Stevens coming to a close, we’re excited to continue building momentum with our longest-standing and best-selling dealer in Australia,” said Zero Motorcycles Director of International Expansion, Adrian O’Donoghue.
More than 400 unsold Zero units were recently put up for auction at a heavily discounted price following the Peter Stevens collapse. Australian Electric Motor Co purchased a small number of bikes, parts, and accessories at the auction, but most were picked up by private buyers.
Peter Stevens administrator KordaMentha identified Zero as a particular challenge to the group, arguing that electric is a “niche segment” with appeal to a “limited demographic”.
Australian Electric Motor Co already acts as an import and service hub for Zero, while its UK-based sister company, English Electric Motor Co, has been an authorised Zero retailer since 2017.
“Zero remains a great brand we know and love,” said Australian Electric Motor Co Director, Tobin Page. “We’re excited to take the relationship to the next level, leveraging our experience as a Zero importer, retailer, and service partner.”
