Here's an update on our recent story about a proposal to impose a zero blood alcohol limit on Queensland motorcyclsists. The state's Department for Transport and Main Roads has now called for tenders on a study of the safety benefits of such a law.
The documentation says the winning bidder is to provide research services to inform the development of government policy in relation to possible road safety benefits of introducing a reduced general limit (as defined in s.79A Transport Operations Road Use Management Act 1995) or zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for all motorcycle riders.
This idea of zero BAC for all riders has recently been promoted by the department through local media such as the Courier Mail newspaper. It argues that motorcycles are more difficult than cars to operate, and that professional transport operators are required to have zero BAC.
The department has also been a fan of fitting electronic location and identifier tags to all motorcycles.
