Yamaha has revealed an all-new middleweight sportsbike based on the same engine featured in the popular MT-09 naked bike.
Due to arrive on Australian shores in May 2025 with an introductory price tag of $23,199, the new Yamaha YZF-R9 should compete with KTM’s upcoming 990 RC R.
The YZF-R9 utilises the MT-09’s proven 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder CP3 powerplant but gets a unique ECU tune and optimised gear ratios for blend supersport performance and street-friendly delivery.
Yamaha claims that the YZF-R9’s advanced gravity-cast Deltabox frame is the lightest aluminium frame ever offered on a Yamaha supersport model, while the bike also benefits from high-spec and fully-adjustable KYB suspension and premium Brembo Stylema braking components.
The new machine has MotoGP-inspired winglets, as well as a dedicated supersport riding position, while a full-suite of electronics ensures the R9 isn’t lacking in the tech department. With an advanced six-axis IMU, the bike features multiple ride modes, nine-level cornering traction control, cornering ABS, slide control, lift control, engine brake management, launch control, and back slip regulator.
All of this is complemented by a five-inch full-colour TFT display with smartphone connectivity, while LED lighting and cruise control are also standard.
Alongside the new R9, Yamaha also confirmed updates for the 2025 YZF-R3, while the YZF-R7, track-only YZF-R6, and YZF-R15 will all arrive Down Under unchanged.
