Yamaha YZF-R25 unveiled

The production version of the sportsbike unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show has been revealed in Indonesia – the county where it will be built

Yamaha has taken the covers off the production version of the fully faired YZF-R25, which produces a tidy 35.5hp at 12,000rpm and 23Nm at 10,000rpm from the parallel twin engine.

There is nothing confirmed for the Australian market as yet, but Yamaha Motor Australia’s communications  manager Sean Goldhawk told the Bikesales Network that his company is “talking with the factory about getting this model but more relevant to the Australian market”. If it does arrive Down Under, competition in the ultra-competitive learner market will include the Kawasaki Ninja 300 (39hp, 27Nm) and the forthcoming Honda CBR300 (30.4hp, 27Nm).

Currently, the YZF-R15 is on sale in Australia (review HERE).

The Indonesia-built R-25 was first unveiled as a concept at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, with styling in the mould of Yamaha’s YZF-R1 MotoGP racer. In fact, Yamaha released a YouTube clip of the R25 that began with its focus on the top-tier machine. Factory pilot Valentino Rossi, suited up and ready for action, then bypasses the M1 in favour of the new R25. "It really packs a punch," Rossi says, although we suspect he’s not making a direct comparison with his regular ride…

The ‘baby YZF-M1’ theme continued at the launch in Indonesia, and some other R25 features include:

  • 166kg weight
  • Y-spoke wheels
  • 41mm tel4esocops fork, monoshock rear
  • Analogue/digital instrumentation
  • 780mm seat height – 20mm less than the YZF-R15
  • 298mm/220mm single discs
  • LED tail light

We’ll keep you posted on Yamaha Motor Australia’s plans for the R25.
