In a decision which is certain to be replicated by the other Japanese manufacturers, Yamaha Motor Australia (YMA) will increase retail prices across the board on its motorcycles, scooters and ATVs from December 1, and has put the blame squarely on the current exchange rate woes between the Aussie dollar and Japanese yen.
BikeSales Network sources can reveal that YMA General Manager, Steven Cotterell, made the revised price list announcement in a recent dealer bulletin, emphasising "the full impact of the exchange rate is not being passed on, but expect increases of up to five percent at this stage".
Under the new pricing, the 2008 model YZF-R1 will retail for $19,899, the popular WR450F will rise to $12,999, and the FJR1300A will be available for $24,900.
In May this year, one Australian dollar was buying just over 100 yen, which was the highest level in over a decade. Now it's languishing at 63 yen - and it could go even further as international investors continue to offload the Australian dollar.
For importers, a 30 percent drop in the exchange rate doesn't make for pretty reading, which is why YMA has taken the inevitable step of updating its price list.
About 67 percent of ATVs, scooters and motorcycles sold in Australia are Japanese products.
