Construction of the new Yamaha motorcycle factory in Indian will begin in September, 2012.
To be located in the major industrial city of Chennai, the facility will have a total floor space of approximately 114,000 m2 with completion and start of operations scheduled for January, 2014.
The new factory will employ 1800 people and have an annual motorcycle production capacity of 400,000 units at the start of operations. Production capacity will then be increased in stages to a level of 1.8 million units annually by 2018, at which time employment is expected to reach 6500 people. The forecast for total investment until 2018 is 24 billion yen.
Yamaha currently has an annual motorcycle production capacity of only 600,000 units in India at the two India Yamaha Motor (IYM) factories near the capital of New Delhi. Plans are already in progress to boost production capacity of those factories to one million units.
The motorcycle market in India, with its population 1.2 billion, has continued to grow year by year due to factors including the country’s stable political and economic conditions, the spreading availability of finance and an expanding urban middle class.
In 2011, motorcycle demand in India exceeded 13 million units, making it the world’s second largest market. Yamaha motorcycle sales and exports grew from 380,000 units in 2010 to 520,000 in 2011.
The forecast for Yamaha sales in 2012, when total demand in India is expected to make it the world’s largest motorcycle market, is a 23 percent year-on-year growth to 640,000 units (450,000 in India, 190,000 exported).
