Unveiled to the press at the recent Yamaha Star cruiser launch in New South Wales is a bolt-on kit that transforms the best selling LAMS-approved cruiser, Yamaha’s Star XVS650, into a trendy bobber-style machine.
Consisting of replacement handlebars, seat, rear fender, rego plate relocator, shotgun Vance & Hines exhaust and associated wiring and cables, the colour matched kit can be retro fitted to a second-hand bike or dealer fitted to a new machine.
Pricing isn’t currently available, but indications are that if you order the kit at the time of purchasing a new bike, there will be around a $1000 discount. Early guesstimates are that the kit alone will cost approximately $2500 (excluding fitting). The Yamaha-backed kit will not void the manufacturer’s five-year warranty on the bike.
As can be seen from the photos, the transformation is stark and pictures do not do the bike justice. The cow horn bars are over a metre wide (motocross bars are about 800mm) and radically change the riding position from laidback cruiser to slightly miffed outlaw (gangsta sneer not included in kit). The rear of the bike sees a change to a much more designed and flowing fender and the downsizing of lights to LED units.
In the metal, the bike is one of the best “factory” conversions we’ve seen. The kit is Australian-designed, manufactured in Melbourne and is due in dealers by the end of December, 2012, and Yamaha had it on display at last weekend’s Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne.
We’ll bring you exact pricing and availability details as soon as we get them.
