Yamaha Motor has unveiled a new engine technology – one that it says meets the goal of improving fuel efficiency of its motorcycles by 50 per cent compared to 2008 models.
It's called ‘Blue Core', and Yamaha has big plans for the concept: it aims for an annual production target of five million units by 2020, based on three different types of engines. The platform emphasises high combustion efficiency, excellent cooling performance, and power loss reduction.
Yamaha Motor will progressively introduce Blue Core engine into various models to be launched in both emerging and developed markets.
The first example of Blue Core is the air-cooled 125cc engine that powers the Nozza Grande – a new scooter released in August 2014 in Vietnam (and also manufactured in Vietnam) targeted towards women. The engine has a CVT transmission, forged aluminium piston with offset cylinder, compact high-efficiency fan, and a huge number of slim cooling fins. The power unit weighs 32.1kg.
In 2011, Yamaha developed its first Vietnamese scooter for women, the Nozza, which has achieved sales of 110,000 units.
