Yamaha has overhauled its city-savvy NMAX 155 scooter with a more powerful 155cc engine, a stretched frame for roomier ergonomics and more tech such as start-stop to reduce fuel use, keyless start and phone connectivity via an app.
Available now in ‘Sword Grey’, ‘Icon Grey’ and ‘Storm Grey’ liveries and priced at $5399 rideaway, or $150 more expensive than the outgoing model, the NMAX 155, with its 13-inch wheels and maxi-scooter styling, fits between the entry-level D’elight 125 ($3699 rideaway) and sporty XMAX 300 ($8899 rideaway) in Yamaha’s six-model scooter line-up. Rivals include the likes of the Honda PCX150 ($4999), Kymco People S 150 ($4950) and Peugeot Belville 200 RS ($5990). There’s also Piaggio’s more expensive Medley 150 ($6490).
Major mechanical updates for the liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine include variable valve timing; a new cylinder head; a larger airbox and higher compression ratio (up from 10.5 to 11.6:1), all of which add up to quicker, more linear acceleration characteristics and a higher (yet unspecified) top speed, according to Yamaha.
As seen in some scooters and common in modern cars, the NMAX’s stop-start system automatically cuts the engine when stationary, thus reducing fuel usage and emissions, and quickly restarts when the rider twists the throttle. The system can be turned on or off as desired via a switch.
Other notable highlights include ABS and traction control for added safety; a 7.1L fuel capacity; ample small-item storage including a 12V socket to recharge devices, and a 23-litre underseat storage space capable of holding an XL full-face helmet.
The ‘Yamaha Connect’ app integrates with the LCD dash to receive calls, emails and messages notifications; extended data (such as throttle opening, rate of acceleration and service recommendations) as well as a handy parking locator function to help locate your scooter in large parking lots.
