Yamaha’s all-new MT-09 triple is now available in Australia for $10,999 plus on-road costs, focussed on all-round agility, a linear torque curve, upright riding position and light weight.
Yamaha’s decision to move into the three-cylinder realm has opened “up a new world of possibilities”, and the 847cc engine (bore and stroke of 78mm x 59.1mm) produces 115hp (at 10,000rpm) and 85Nm (at 8500rpm) and weighs about 10kg less than the four-cylinder power unit in the FZ8.
The powerplant, which runs a 120-degree crank, has a primary coupled-force counter rotating balancer, forged aluminium pistons, 12-hole fuel injectors and unequal length intake funnels. It has the company’s chip controlled throttle, and three separate riding modes: STD Mode, A Mode and B Mode. STD Mode is for a wide range of riding and road conditions; A Mode delivers the “maximum level of adrenalin”; and the B Mode delivers a milder throttle response.
The MT-09 runs with an all-new aluminium frame. It has die-cast left and right halves which, like the MT-01 frame, are bolted together at the head pipe and rear pivot areas.
It’s also 10kg lighter in the chassis than the FZ8, and its dry weight is 171kg, wet weight 188kg with 14 litres of fuel.
The swingarm is a CF aluminium die-cast design with the left and right sides welded together with extruded aluminium cross members, while the 41mm upside-down forks are adjustable for rebound damping. The rear has rebound and preload adjustment.
The stoppers are radial-mount four-pot calipers wrapped around floating 298mm discs aided by sticky radial tyres. The MT-09 has cast-aluminium 10-spoke wheels, and tyre sizes are supersport-spec 120/70-17 and 180/55-17.
The seat has a flat profile, while the fuel tank incorporates deeply recessed knee grip areas.
An all-new asymmetrically mounted LCD instrument panel features a digital bar display for the tachometer, and the panel also includes a gear position indicator.
Yamaha has designed a unique range of accessories, for the most sport-oriented riders through to those looking for functional solutions.
Colours are orange, matte grey or blue.
The Bikesales Network will be riding the MT-09 for the first time in mid-November, so stay tuned for a full launch report.
