While Yamaha’s all-new YZF-R1 will be its piece de resistance at the upcoming EICMA show in Milan, another important model will also be welcomed into the family – the FJ-09.
Well, that’s what the bike is set to be called in America, but for Australia, it may signal the return of the TDM badge, which was phased out in 2010 with the TDM900. If it’s the famous FJ prefix, it will be for the first time since 1995. Or it could be the MT-09X, which would make a lot of sense considering that it’s based on the popular model.
Nomenclature aside, the bike, based on its MT-09 DNA, should be a beautifully complaint all-rounder, and powered by that tremendously torquey, natural, easy and responsive 115hp/87.5Nm engine. That’s certainly a pleasant starting point for a sports-touring type machine.
The seating position will be quite upright, and there will be longer-travel suspension and more ground clearance, although with cast wheels the off-road capability will be limited – but that’s what the Teneres are there for. Mind you, Yamaha may include some wire wheels in the accessories package, as well as other bits and pieces such as bashplates for those who want to go chasing some grit.
The new bike will be up against bikes like the new BMW, one of the new Triumph Tigers, the Suzuki V-Strom and the new KTM 1050.
