Yamaha MT-01 SP

Yamaha is launching a new limited-edition MT-01 'SP' model in Australia, packed with several tasty components to improve handling and aesthetics.

Priced at $25,999 (not including government and delivery charges), the new model costs roughly six grand more than the regular model and is available in "strictly limited" numbers.

Perhaps the most important new feature of the MT-01 SP are 43mm Ohlins front forks which feature "optimal spring and damping settings" to suit the bike's weight. The rear end also gets an Ohlins shock with a separate reservoir, improving rear end feel.

Yamaha claims the Italian suspension mods give the MT-01 SP "new levels of road-holding and excitement," and they also look pretty spiffy.

Other additions to the limited-edition up-spec Yammy include Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres measuring 120/70 at the front and 190/50 at the rear, both shod to new-look 17-inch gold rims.

In addition to a new colour scheme – red and white fuel tank, red-chrome MT tank logos and a two-tone seat – the SP model gets fatter handlebars: a 28.6mm job compared to the previous 25.4mm item. Eagle-eyed enthusiasts will also note the bars come with machined aluminium handlebar crowns.

Track to the rear of the bike and you may notice a protective "nano-film" coating (allegedly made on the second moon of Saturn) covering the exhaust cans. There's also a smattering of chrome plating on some engine and chassis components.

The Yamaha MT-01 SP, the 'torque sports' bike is powered by the same 1670cc 48-degree V-twin engine as standard model that pumps out massive torque at low revs, perfect for rolling burnouts.
