Yamaha has released a new 250cc naked machine — the MT-25 — which will go on sale in Indonesia this month, using the same engine and frame platform as found in the YZF-R25.
But it's in the looks department where the MT-25 raises the most eyebrows, and there's no doubt its edgy 'I'm-like-big-brothers' persona would strike a chord in many other markets around the world, including Australia.
And that's exactly what Yamaha is thinking, conclusion its media release by saying that the MT-25 is "a global model charged with expanding business scale", and that its launch is also being planned for many other countries around the globe, including developed markets like Australia.
At the moment, Yamaha doesn't have a sport small-displacement nakedbike in its Aussie line-up, with the YZF-R15 and the just-released YZF-R3 shouldering the workload in the sub 500cc segment. However, both are fully faired, which means the MT-25 is cut from a different cloth and with ergonomics more suited to relaxed city riding.
When contacted by Bikesales, a Yamaha Motor Australia spokesman said "no info yet (on MT-25)".
The MT-25 has a liquid-cooled, in-line twin-cylinder engine, good for 35hp at 12,000rpm and peak torque of 22.6Nm at 10,000rpm, pushing through a six-speed transmission. There are 17-inch wheels are, and weight is 165kg.
It will begin retailing in Indonesia for 46 million Indonesian rupiah, which is equivalent to about $A4500.
