Yamaha Motor Co Ltd, through a subsidiary known as Yamaha Motor Ventures & Laboratory Silicon Valley Inc, has made a $2.8 million investment into start-up company Veniam.
The Silicon Valley-based company is engaged in service provision and communication hardware development, which includes wireless mesh networking suited to communication between moving vehicles, and between moving vehicles and stationary objects. Of course, motorcycles will play a large part in that network going forward.
Veniam has developed and commercialised algorithms which enable the determination of communication routes in wireless mesh networks for moving vehicles, which has been difficult to achieve to date.
For its part, Yamaha will link to planning and development of new technologies, products, and services related to “connected mobility” through the investment in Veniam. The company has also been developing a network hub for all vehicle subsystems, including surveillance cameras, infotainment screens, diagnostics and navigation through a cloud-based system.
In 2013, Veniam launched a vehicular mesh network in Portugal, and now has more than 600 vehicles connected to it, as well as more than 300,000 unique Wi-Fi users.
