I'm not sure whether it was an aberration or the norm for this time of the year, but the cross winds pounding from the Mediterranean Sea on to the Spanish mainland made Perth's Fremantle Doctor appear as frightening as a person blowing through a straw. Actually, it reminded me of the battering I took in 1996 when I was riding down the Stuart Highway from Alice Springs to Coober Pedy on a Honda Gold Wing, except that cattle corpses, road trains, kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles were nowhere to be seen. Now it was 2001, and this time I was aboard Yamaha 's new performance tourer, the FJR1300, as I made my way back to the hotel near the historic city of Cadiz. If you're planning to ride through the eye of a cyclone in the future, then I recommend the FJR as a touring companion, if it's a combination of stability, agility, power and comfort you're after, then I think the FJR is the perfect foil.
