Freestyle motocross rider Joel Balchin is a Suzuki rider, but I reckon he must now have a real soft spot for Yamaha.
Recently, his Suzuki RM250 competition bikes were stolen, but before the thieves could make off with the bikes Joel sprayed them with Yamaha DNA theft protection from a kit leftover following his purchase of a Yamaha PWC.
Police have recovered one bike that was protected and traced it back to Joel using the Yamaha DNA databank.
“To be honest I was surprised to see the bike again. It was obviously stolen by professional crooks because the VIN number had been ground off and replaced with a new number. Without the DNA protection there is no way the cops could have traced the bike back to me,” says Balchin.
Ed Murray from Yamaha DNA was surprised to learn that the bike in question wasn’t even a Yamaha. He said: “I was a bit confused at first to find that a non-Yamaha motocross bike was carrying Yamaha marine identification, but it proves that the system works and we can trace anything carrying Yamaha DNA protection. Hopefully the other bikes will show up soon."
All Yamaha motorcycles, scooters and ATVs are protected with the Yamaha DNA theft protection system.
