Kiwi freestyle motocross ace Levi Sherwood has triumphed in round four of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, defeating local hero Dany Torres to stand at the top of the podium and assume the top of the series' leaderboard.
The 20-year-old battled his way through an epic tussle with Spaniard Dany Torres at Madrid's Las Ventas bullfighting arena on Friday, July 20, before some 20,000 screaming FMX fans.
Torres, the defending X-Fighters champion, surfed the wave of patriotism rippling throughout the spectacular arena, but fell just one helmet -- or one of five categories -- short in the final showdown. Still, the locals had plenty to cheer about, with the third podium place being filled by another Spaniard, Maikel Melero.
With another victory at the series opener in Dubai, Sherwood's effort has speared him to the top of the World Tour's standings with 230 points, ahead of Chile's Javier Villegas (150 points) and the USA's Todd Potter (145 points), with two rounds remaining.
Sherwood was thrilled with the outcome at Madrid. "It was pretty intense -- it was really tough going against Dany in front of his home crowd," he said.
The Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour now moves to Munich's Olympic Stadium in Germany on August 11 before the series finale in Sydney on October 6. Click here for more information on the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour. Results: Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, Madrid, Spain
