WSX returning to Australia in 2024

The World Supercross Championship is headed for Perth, while the Abu Dhabi round will coincide with the F1 finale

Despite the departure of Adam Bailey as CEO in April, the WSX Championship has announced its 2024 calendar, with Perth set to host two rounds.

Starting at Vancouver’s BC Place on October 26, the series will then shift to HBF Park in Perth for a double header on November 23 and 24. The finale will take place on December 4 at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Importantly, the final round at Etihad Arena will take place in the same week as the Formula 1 finale at Yas Marina, hopefully providing a big publicity boost for WSX.

Since its inception in 2022, the controversial series has battled resistance from rival competitions, a change of investors, cancelled events, and a revolving door of personnel. But Australian-born promoter SX Global is forging ahead with the 2024 season.

Created by Australians Adam Bailey, Ryan Sanderson, and Tony Cochrane, the WSX Championship was officially declared an FIM World Championship and was designed to take supercross to a global audience.

While promoter SX Global always insisted otherwise, the series was an immediate threat to the American-based AMA Supercross Championship – the former holder of the FIM World Championship rights. The AMA responded by creating its own unofficial SuperMotorcross World Championship.

In the years since, Bailey, Sanderson, and Cochrane have all departed SX Global, while original investor Mubadala Capital were replaced with a new investor group in 2023.

The 2024 calendar leaves out Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium for the first time, however that opens the door for the major AFL stadium to host the yet-to-be-announced final round of the 2024 Australian Supercross Championship.

The WSX dates mean that the local championship will likely not appear as a support class in Australia as per previous years.

Announcements on teams and riders are still to come, but two-time reigning champion Ken Roczen has revealed he will defend his title.
