The new World Supercross Championship continues to take shape with promoters SX Global confirming another two exclusive teams for the inaugural 2022 season.
Yarrive Konsky has secured one of the licences and will run the Honda Genuine Honda Racing team. The Australian industry stalwart has spent two decades running teams both locally and in the USA, and has notched up a number of Australian championships.
The Honda Genuine team is based in America and is managed by former star Martin Davalos.
Also joining the championship is Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX, a Minnesota team owned by Brandon Haas and Scott Jeffery. Interestingly, the ClubMX outfit isn’t affiliated directly with one manufacturer, meaning that team riders may pilot different brands.
Only 10 exclusive licenses have been made available for the 2022 season, and there is currently one team that is yet to be announced.
Dubbed a “pilot” season, the inaugural WSX series was originally set to feature five rounds around the globe, however that has been revised to three. Only the British Grand Prix at Principality Stadium in Cardiff has been announced so far.
The British Grand Prix is scheduled for October 8 and will feature AMA Supercross stars Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac. Roczen will join one of the ten teams, while Tomac will race as a wildcard entry.
With $50 million in funding allocated to team and rider support and a $250,000 prize purse for each round, the new WSX series is tipped to usher in a new era of supercross racing. The unique team licence model and promotional aspects of the series are inspired by Formula 1 and MotoGP.
