It was a Sunday to remember for Chaz Davies in Aragon, Spain on April 14 with the Welshman winning both 19-lap races in round two of the 2013 Superbike World Championship.
Davies, who got his maiden WSBK podium on the same track in 2012, took it one step further this year with his clean sweep, which has now lifted him to second on the championship table on 63pts, behind Aprilia’s runaway leader Sylvain Guintoli (85).
“For me it is just an amazing day. I cannot explain how happy I am,” said Davies.
“What a weekend! My first victory with BMW and then the double win -- this is something I was hoping to achieve this year but I did not expect it to happen this early. I want to thank BMW and everybody who supported me.
“I knew coming here that we are going to be strong. BMW has done a fantastic job over the last month we had off since Australia, and everybody was working very hard. In addition, I now really feel that the RR is mine, I feel so comfortable on it.”
In race one, front runners Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team) and polesitter Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) experienced technical problems on lap four and five respectively, which opened the door for Davies to lad from the front for most of the journey as he won from Guintoli and his BMW team-mate Marco Melandri. Jonathan Rea (Honda) and Loris Baz (Kawasaki) completed the top five.
In race two, Sykes made his way onto the podium behind Davies and Guintoli – who is the only rider to finish on the podium in all four races in 2013 – while Laverty crashed out on lap one. Davide Guigliano (Aprilia) and Melandri were fourth and fifth.
Despite a double DNF, Laverty still remains third in the championship on 45pts, ahead of Melandri (43pts), Michel Fabrizio (Aprilia, 42pts) and Sykes (38pts).
In the 18-lap World Supersport race, Frenchman Fabien Foret (Kawasaki) was the victor from Michael Van Der Mark (Honda) and Luca Scassa (Kawasaki). Australian rookie Matt Davies (Honda) was 18th, while countryman Mitchell Carr (Triumph) crashed out.
