Phillip Island will continue to host the Australian round of the Superbike World Championship until at least 2014.
The three-year contract extension was announced by the Victorian minister for major events, Tim Holding, during today's official media launch at the Eureka Tower in Melbourne for the 2010 season opener at Phillip Island this weekend (February 26-28).
"Phillip Island has been synonymous with motorsport for so many years, going back to the 100-mile race back in 1926, which was the first of the Australian Grands Prix," said Mr Holding. "Since the construction of the grand prix circuit, it's continued to go from strength to strength and has given so much joy to fans of motorsport right around the world.
"We are pleased to be reaffirming the Victorian Government's support for this wonderful superbike championship until 2014.
"As part of that three-year extension, we are also able to announce the opening round will also take place at the Phillip Island circuit over the next two years.
"That is a great economic boost to the Bass Coast region and the Victorian and Australian economies through the tourism impact."
The CEO of WSBK promoter Infront Motor Sports, Paulo Flammini, also flew in from Italy for the announcement.
"I am particularly happy today because we have confirmed a strong relationship that exists between the Victorian Government, the Phillip Island circuit and our company," said Flammini. "Phillip Island is has been a classic of WSBK since 1991, and I can say it has always been one of the most exciting events.
"For me, the destiny of the Phillip Island circuit changed enormously when the Linfox Group took over the circuit.
"Since then it has been much easier to work with the circuit, and the horizon of development is reality interesting and long-term.
"That's why we have been extremely happy to sign a deal that goes through to 2014, but we are sure it's not the end and we will continue to enjoy a long-term relationship."
