Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) has completed a superb weekend at Lausitzring in Germany with a pair of wins, both times over reigning world champion and current championship leader Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team).
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) shared the third places.
“It was a great race and I loved every minute of it," said Davies after his win in race two.
"It was different from yesterday though, as we had to work our way up from third row on the grid. We had a good start and in the first couple of laps we were within sight of the lead, so when I saw Rea making his move I tried to hunt down him and Marco. It wasn’t easy to pass them, but then I just tried to set my own pace, ride clean, and not make mistakes.
"I was surprised by our rhythm today in the high 1:36 mark, we definitely improved since the tests here a month ago, and it shows the effort everyone is putting in. I’m confident going into Portimão, but we’ll enjoy this double for now and get prepared for another battle.”
Davies won the weekend, but Rea has continued to strengthen his grip on the 2017 championship. With four rounds to go (eight races), Rea is 70pts (381 to 311) in front of Sykes, followed by Davies (276), Melandri (218) and Alex Lowes (Yamaha, 169).
World supersport
Late drama in Germany saw Yamaha rider Sheridan Morais take the victory, with Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki) and Lucas Mahias (Yamaha) on the podium in a race curtailed after a late crash for Federico Caricasulo (Yamaha) and Mahias.
The race standings were taken from the rider positions at the end of lap 17 after a crash on the penultimate lap – the 18th lap of the 4.255km Lausitzring track – which saw Caricasulo go down at turn two, with Mahias also involved.
Mahias was able to remount and was therefore included in the final race results, while Caricasulo was immediately taken away for a medical check-up.
It is therefore a first career win for South African rider Morais, who also took his first pole this weekend, showing great pace on his YZF-R6.
Second place for world champion Sofuoglu moves him to within 1pt of the championship lead, which is still held by Mahias.
Aussie Anthony West (Yamaha) was seventh.
Superstock 1000 European Championship
Michael Rinaldi (Ducati) notched an important Superstock 1000 European Championship win in Germany, taking advantage of late mishaps for Federico Sandi (BMW) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki).
Championship leader Rinaldi was joined on the podium by Aussie teammate Mike Jones and Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha).
