Pole Jaroslaw Hampel produced an unforgettable 21pt maximum to win
the Scandinavian Speedway Grand Prix in Stockholm on September 27, with
Australia’s Chris Holder fourth.
Hampel ended one of the most
difficult spells of his career – he managed just 12pts in the previous
four rounds -- in spectacular style, romping to a sensational seven wins
at the Friends Arena to record the first SGP maximum since Tomasz
Gollob went through the card unbeaten in the 2010 Nordic SGP at Vojens.
Hampel
triumphed in the final ahead of world championship leader Greg Hancock,
who is close to becoming a triple world champion, with Polish star
Krzysztof Kasprzak ahead of Holder.
Holder won his semi-final,
and overall took home three wins out of seven races for an evening haul
of 13pts. Australia’s second rider, Troy Batchelor, was well down the
order with a 6pt haul, which included one win.
With one round
remaining in Poland on October 11, Hancock holds a 12pt buffer (127 to
115) over Kasprzak, followed by reigning world champion Tai Woffinden
(112), followed by Matej Zagar (109), Nicki Pedersen (107) and Holder
(93). Batchelor is 11th on 85pts, with Darcy Ward, still on suspension
after his recent in-competition positive alcohol test, 13th on 75pts.
