Windham lights up Canberra

With Chad Reed out of the picture, the Americans pounce on the top three positions in a dominating performance

It was an all-American affair at round two of the Super X title in Canberra on October 23, with US imports Kevin Windham, Josh Hansen and Justin Brayton claiming the Open class trifecta in the absence of Aussie star Chad Reed.

A crowd of 9250 watched riders battle it out on the tough and tricky Canberra track, which was quite slick in some sections after some afternoon rain.

The Triple Challenge format decided the final placings for round two, which pitted riders against each other in three seven-lap races in the Open class, and three six-lap races in the Lites.

In the Open class, Windham (Honda) and Hansen (Kawasaki) went 1-2 in all three battles, while Jay Marmont (Yamaha) was the only local rider to get a look in when he finished third in race two, ahead of Brayton (Yamaha).

Marmont finished fourth overall in an emotional return to Canberra after his memorable win there last year, only two days after the passing of his baby daughter, Lila.

“What a great start to my time here in Australia. I am really enjoying the country and the people and had a lot of fun racing here tonight.

“The different formats definitely make it interesting because anything can happen. I am just glad I rode well and consistently and got the win in all three races.”

Hansen now leads the championship on 108pts, followed by Brayton (98), Marmont (88), Daniel Reardon (Honda, 77) and Windham (75).

However, Windham will only compete in one more round, as will Brayton.

Reed, the round one winner in Newcastle, is already out of the top 10 and is unlikely to return this campaign unless he can lock in a new deal with a manufacturer in the next few weeks.

Defending Lites champion Matt Moss (Suzuki) was also unstoppable, his three-race blitz sealing him overall honours ahead of UK’s Steven Clarke (Suzuki) and Ryan Marmont (KTM).

American PJ Larsen (KTM) was the only rider who had the pace to roll with Moss, but after two second places he crashed in the final moto, taking him out of contention.

Larsen has now dropped to second in the championship behind Moss (97 to 115), with Marmont in third on 87.

The championship now heads to Launceston for the third round at Aurora Stadium next weekend.
