When a Hero comes along

The cash-rich Hero MotoCorp in India has made its first real strategic move to broaden its global reach, and its first port of call is America and Erik Buell Racing

Indian company Hero MotoCorp, the world's largest manufacturer of powered two-wheelers, will buy a minority stake in US motorcycle firm Erik Buell Racing (EBR) as it looks to broaden its technological reach after it parted ways with long-time collaborator, Honda, in March, 2011.

The cashed-up HeroCorp has made no bones that it would like to turn into a global company, and the tie-up with EBR is seen as one way to get a foothold in overseas markets. Currently, 98 percent of Hero’s sales come from India – equating to about six million sales per year.

Financial details of the deal with EBR are not known, and it’s expected to be formalised within months.

EBR is now a standalone company itself after Harley-Davidson ceased making Buells in 2009.
