Australia's Anthony West's Moto2 career with the Qatari-backed QMMF Racing Team is over, and unless he receives a last-minute lifeline with another outfit he won't be on the startline for the remaining five rounds in 2015 — which includes the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on October 18.
West, 34, will be replaced at QMMF by reigning world No. 2 Mika Kallio, who parted ways with his previous Italtrans Racing Team following last Sunday's Moto2 round at Misano — at the same time as West was going through the termination process with QMMF.
This was no coincidence, as Kallio joined QMMF at a post-Misano test session on September 14, and has now been confirmed as an incumbent for the balance of this season alongside Spaniard Julian Simon.
Simon finished an excellent fifth at Misano, with West back in 15th position. Simon is 13th in the Moto2 standings on 58pts, and West is 19th on 30pts.
West, a two-time Moto2 race winner, hasn't made a comment on his QMMF departure as yet, other than a brief posting on social media to say that he was now unemployed and on the hunt for a ride.
The Queenslander may be presented with a number of options, including remaining in the Moto2 fold or perhaps looking further afield to categories like world superbike or world supersport.
With the departure of West, Moto3 rider Remy Gardner and MotoGP campaigner Jack Miller remain the only Australians in world championship grand prix racing.
