Waters wins MX Nationals in Canberra

And moves into championship lead

Honda's Todd Waters has claimed the overall win in a gruelling round two of the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals in Canberra.

Waters reaped a 90pt harvest in Canberra to finish ahead of defending champion Jay Marmont (Yamaha, 80), Tye Simmonds (KTM, 78), privateer Dean Ferris (Honda, 73) and Andrew McFarlane (KTM, 65).

Waters, 19, won two of the four back-to-back motos and finished second in the remainder. His final victory was breathtaking after a last lap pass on fellow teenager Simmonds.

Waters said: "This is a great result for the whole team. They have all been putting in 100 percent, so it is great to be able to do the same and give them this win.

"I didn't really get the best of starts, but I put my head down and charged through and came away with two race wins.

"My focus is firmly on this championship and I am extremely fortunate to have a fantastic support network around me. My mum, dad, sister Nikki and girlfriend Jill along with everyone from the Cougar Bourbon Honda Thor Racing Team all help to make my job so much easier."

Round one winner Billy Mackenzie (Kawasaki) bolted from the blocks with victory in race one, but a crash in race two saw the rot set in.

He only left Canberra with 25pts for his race one victory, and he's now plummeted to eight in the championship, with Waters the new leader by 13pts (149 to 136) over Marmont, who was the race two winner.

Simmonds is third on 1390pts ahead of Ferris (127) and McFarlane (111).

In the Lites class Kirk Gibbs (Yamaha) was the overall winner ahead of a rejuvenated Lawson Bopping (Suzuki). Gibbs also leads ye championship from American PJ Larsen (KTM).

Round three will be held in Barrabool (Vic) on May 2.
