Reigning Australian superbike champion Josh Waters has been given the nod to compete in two upcoming rounds of the American superbike title as a replacement for the injured Blake Young at Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki.
Young broke his L1 vertebra in a recent test at Barber Motorsports Park, the same outing where Waters impressed with the fourth fastest time on a circuit he had neve seen before.
With Young now on the long-term injury list, Waters will be his fill in alongside the other Suzuki incumbent, Tommy Hayden, at Mid-Ohio on July 16-18 and a week later at Laguna Seca (July 23-25). Waters will once again be accompanied by Team Suzuki Manager Phil Tainton.
"Firstly I would like to wish Blake a speedy recovery," Waters said.
"When I got the call up I was blown away that the team thought of me to fill in. I know it's not going to be easy as the next two tracks are quite hard, but I know I have the best team behind me."
The Rockstar Makita Suzuki factory AMA superbike team has won 10 of the past 11 championships, including seven consecutive superbike titles since 2003. The team is managed by Australian Peter Doyle, who ran Kawasaki's hugely successful production and superbike teams locally in the 1980s and 1990s.
