On September 24, 2016, 12-time trials world champ Dougie Lampkin will attempt to rewrite history by doing a non-stop wheelie around the entire length of the 37.75-mile Isle of Man TT course.
Riding a 300cc fuel-injected two-stroke trials bike with modified footpegs and gearing, the 40-year-old British rider will have oncoming traffic to contend with, as the island’s roads remain fully operational, and will have just one chance at to pull off what he hopes to be a history-making run.
“Without a doubt, the biggest challenge is the wind, as it’s just not in my control,” Lampkin said. “Headwind and tailwind are not such a complete disaster, but side wind is a no-go. It’s just windy all the time on the island.
“I probably should have thought about how long and difficult it was going to be beforehand, but as soon as that popped up, that was it – my mind was set.”
The stunt will be streamed live through Red Bull’s website and Lampkin estimates it will take him just under two hours to complete the record at a projected average speed of between 30-35km/h.
“The amount of time I wake up in the middle of the night, thinking about wheeling around that course…,” Lampkin grinned. “It’ll probably be the biggest challenge of my career.”
